You may think that once you hit the big 5-0 that you can let yourself go. After all, you feel just fine, considering your age. Gyms are for the young, and you will just feel out of place and silly. You could not be more wrong. If anything, you need to keep yourself physically active more after you hit 50 and before. If you have never engaged in physical exercise in your life, this is the time to start. You will feel better, and you may even slow down the aging process by simply following these tips.
Consult your doctor
Get a full physical checkup before you do any exercise. Get the go signal from your doctor, and ask for advice on what type of exercise you can do.
Find a partner
Exercising can be boring, so you need someone to keep you motivated. Ask your spouse, a child, or a friend to go with you to the gym. If gyms are not your style, go to the park or the mall and walk briskly for at least 15 minutes.
Don’t try to do too much at once, especially if this is your first time to try an exercise regimen. You could injure yourself and put you off exercise in the future. Start with a walk, or a few minutes on a stationary bike. Do a few stretches to loosen tight muscles, and discover some you have never felt before.
Invest in good shoes
You have to protect your feet when you go out walking. Do not think your leather shoes or slippers will do just fine. They will not. Invest in some good socks as well to absorb sweat and cushion your feet.
Listen to your body. If you are feeling winded, or you feel pain, stop. Give your body time to adjust to the changes. Do not push yourself too hard. Taking baby steps can help you reach your goals successfully, if a little slowly.
